GUEST – Dave Toycen, World Vision Canada President

TOPIC –  June 20th is World Refugee Day.

INFO – Canadian journalists Shannon Gormley and Drew Gough have put together a website that illustrates the impact of the Syrian refugee crisis on all of the G-7 countries. While it can be hard to grasp figures such as 160,000 people killed and more than nine million displaced, the website helps put this into perspective with country-specific figures.  In Canada, for example, a refugee crisis of similar size would mean that everyone in a city the size of Sudbury, Ontario would have been killed, and everyone in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver and several of the Maritime provinces would be forced to flee their homes.

The site can be found here – http://s3.amazonaws.comifweweresyrian.org/ and I hope you can take a moment to take a look at it and, if you are so moved, consider posting a link on your social media feeds to help build awareness of the Syrian crisis. Drew and Shannon are also available for interviews via phone or Skype.

GUEST – Dr. Zach, GFB House Doctor, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Medicine at McGill University

TOPIC – Blood thinners

INFO – Millions of people take blood thinners for many different reasons, including to decrease the risk of heart attack and stroke, and to treat known blood clots. Blood thinners work in many different ways. Types of blood thinners include aspirin, warfarin, and clopidogrel, and more recently a new class called factor 10a inhibitors. Factor 10a inhibitors are effective like warfarin but cannot be reversed as readily in cases of excessive bleeding.
We will discuss the reasons why these medications are prescribed, the risks and the benefits of taking them, and interactions they have with other medications and foods.
