Canada’s leading cancer researcher says cigarette packages sold in this country, warning of the dangers of smoking, carry some of the most prominent health messages in the world.

As mandated by our federal government, three-quarters of the space on Canadian packaging is now devoted to graphic pictures and text discouraging people from lighting up.

The Canadian Cancer Society says that places us fourth in a ranking of nearly 200 countries — up sharply from a 15th-place finish two years ago.

Australia took top spot by covering more than 80 percent of its packages with health warnings.
