A staggering sum was paid for a Renaissance drawing last night.
Raphael’s “Head of Apostle” sold at Sotheby’s in London for $47.8 million – just over twice its pre-sale estimate.
The black chalk drawing came from Chatsworth, the Derbyshire home of the Duke of Devonshire.
It had belonged to the Duke’s family since sometime late in the 17th or early 18th century.
The Raphael drawing was created around 1519 and was a study for a figure in one of the artist’s greatest late paintings, “Transfiguration,” which belongs to the Vatican Museum in Rome.
