The Quebec government has tabled its controversial right-to-die legislation for debate.

Bill 52 outlines  conditions necessary for someone to receive medical assistance to die and spells out the requirements before a doctor can accept.

The proposed  legislation has its first reading today – before politicians break for the summer holidays.

Euthanasia and assisted suicide are not legal in Canada  and the federal government has  said it won’t change the Criminal Code.

But in January, a  panel said Quebec’s legislation would clarify how acts to end a life would  clear doctors of the threat of criminal charges when they assist in the death.
