The 2015 Pan Am Games now have an official mascot.

Pachi the porcupine has been named -after receiving more than 33,000 votes in an online contest.

More than 4,100 drawings were submitted by young Canadians and six made the shortlist. The final options were professionally illustrated.

Pachi was originally designed by a group of four Grade 8 students from  Buttonville Public School in Markham as  part of a school project led by physical education teacher Mari Ellery.

Porcupines have more than 30,000 quills, but Pachi has 41 – that’s one for each of the Pan American countries competing in the Games.
