Three flag-draped caskets will be the focus of attention at a special ceremony in Moncton today.

Up to seven-thousand police from Canada and the US are expected in the small city to honour three RCMP officers who were shot and killed by a gunman last Wednesday.

Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair is leading Toronto’s contingent of about 200 officers for today’s RCMP regimental funeral. He says the visiting police will be mindful of the “legacy of sacrifice and service” of the RCMP.

Moncton Mayor George Leblanc knew the arrival of thousands of police officers would be way beyond the capacity of hotel space in the city. So he turned to the community, asking if anyone could billet the visiting officers. He says they received more than enough offers within two hours.

Governor-General David Johnston and Prime Minister Stephen Harper will lead the official party honouring Constables Fabrice Gevaudan, Douglas Larche, and Dave Ross.
