The Cessna Citation went down shortly after takeoff from Kelowna en route to Springbank Airport outside Calgary.
His daughter’s father-in-law, Ken Gellatly, was also killed.
The 60-year-old Prentice was MP for Calgary Centre-North from 2004-2010.
He served as Alberta premier from September 2014 until the following spring when the Tories lost their first election in decades to the NDP.
Former prime minister Stephen Harper says Prentice was a family man, friend and proud Canadian.
Toronto Mayor John Tory says to Prentice, whom he knew for 40 years, political office was all about public service.
