Ontario is rolling out COVID-19 tracing app July 2nd as part of major revamp of case contact management system. Premier Doug Ford says the app will notify people based on a number of criteria, including if they were within two metres of a person who tests positive for the virus and if that contact was over an extended period of time. It uses Bluetooth to share anonymous, randomly generated codes with other app users nearby. The Premier says although downloading COVID ALERT is voluntary, he expects many will take part.
“If we don’t have the cooperation of the people of Ontario, we put ourselves more at risk,” Ford told reporters. “So it’s simple, download the app and it’s 100 percent private which was our number one issue.”
