A fourth Canadian citizen in less than two years, has been sentenced to death on drug charges in China.

Ye Jianhui was sentenced Friday in the southern province of Guangdong. The court said in a brief statement, Ye had been found guilty of manufacturing and transporting drugs.

Ties between Canada and China have been strained over Canada’s 2018 arrest of Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou in Vancouver at the request of the U.S.

Friday’s sentencing comes a day after fellow Canadian Xu Weihong was sentenced to death.

Convicted Canadian drug smuggler Robert Schellenberg was sentenced to death in a sudden retrial shortly after Mung’s arrest, and a Canadian citizen identified as Fan Wei was given the death penalty in April of 2019 for his role in a multinational drug smuggling case.

In addition, former Canadian diplomat Michael Kovrig and Canadian entrepreneur Michael Spavor remain detained on vague national security crime charges. They were arrested just weeks after the arrest of Meng Wanzhou.
