Victoria Day is our traditional start-of-summer long holiday weekend. It’s time to shake off the winter blues (and blahs). Did you know Canada is the only country in the world to make the former queen’s birthday an official national holiday? So I thought we’d celebrate with a British spin on our ‘Vintage Favourites’ program. The first hour’s ‘Fabulous Fifties – and Beyond’ salutes the great UK artists from before the so-called ‘British Invasion’ led by The Beatles. We’ll enjoy classic songs by Cliff Richard, Vera Lynn, Lonnie Donegan, Acker Bilk, Tommy Steele and many others.
‘Vintage Canadiana’ waves the Union Jack as well – spotlighting Canadian stars who were born in the UK – you may be surprised to find out who they are. There’s more. Our year-long spotlight on ‘the greatest groups of our time – in alphabetical order’ brings us to Genesis. The legendary English band also gave us their former drummer – Phil Collins – who became a solo superstar. And the Canadian counterpart brings us to The Diamonds – one of our legendary 50s vocal groups.
Have a great holiday weekend – drive safely if you’re on the road – and stay tuned to Zoomer Radio, with ‘Vintage Favourites’ this Sunday from 2:00 to 4:30pm. Cheers!
