There’s an entire sub-genre of rock’n’roll devoted to ‘car songs’ – and it’s a lot of fun. Songs about muscle cars competing on dark lonely highways, or the hi-jinks that went on inside some cars. As long as there’ve been rock’n’roll loving teenagers, there’s been this category of car-songs – from the Beach Boys and Jan & Dean in their California hot-rods, to ‘The Boss’ sprung from a cage on Jersey’s Highway 9. With the 2020 Toronto International Auto Show in full swing I thought I’d rev our musical motors with a celebration of ‘the car song’.
Monday is also ‘Family Day’ across Ontario, so I’ll feature a few of our famous musical families. I’ll also spotlight one of our national treasures – folk icon Buffy Ste.Marie on her upcoming 79th birthday. As always – a varied line-up for our weekly Sunday afternoon get-together – beginning with ‘The Fabulous Fifties – and Beyond’ at 2pm. Join me for ‘Vintage Favourites’ from 2 to 4:30 this Sunday.
