‘THRILLER’ AT 40 !

Do you remember the first time you heard ‘Billie Jean’ by Michael Jackson – with its iconic bass line that kicks in at the 5 second mark?  You heard it once – and you’d never forget it. How about that wicked electric guitar played by Eddie van Halen on ‘Beat It’ … or Vincent Price’s maniacal laugh at the end of ‘Thriller’? Or the cute interplay between Michael and Paul McCartney on ‘The Girl is Mine’ … or … ?    Well – you get the idea.  ‘Thriller’ was packed with unforgettable moments – made even stronger when we saw the videos; and watched Michael doing the ‘moonwalk’ to ‘Billie Jean’ on the ‘Motown 25’ TV special.  ‘Thriller’ went on to win 8 Grammy awards, hold the #1 spot on Billboard’s album charts for 37 weeks and sell over 70 million copies worldwide as the all-time top-selling album.

It’s hard to think that all started 40 years ago – with the album’s release November 30th, 1982.  Has it really been 40 years?  I’ll bring back the memories with all seven of ‘Thriller’s hit singles, plus a song that wasn’t released till ‘Thriller 25’… and tell you the stories behind the songs.

I’ll also have a birthday salute to Jim Cuddy of Blue Rodeo, and in the show’s first hour (2-3pm.) ‘This Week in Zoomer Music‘ will remember the last live performance by John Lennon, the first time Simon and Garfunkel played ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’ live, and I’ll salute the late Jimi Hendrix on what would’ve been his 80th birthday !  (now there’s something to imagine – what might Jimi have given us during his lifetime, had he not died at 27?)  And I’ll tell you ‘The Story Behind the Song‘ ‘Garden Party’ by Rick Nelson – his album of the same name was released 50 years ago this week.  Those are some of the highlights of my next edition of ‘Vintage Favourites’ starting at 2pm. this Sunday (Nov.27)  I hope you’ll tune in.
