FLAHERTY SAYS WEAKER ECONOMIC GROWTH WILL AFFECT GOVERNMENT

A warning from the federal finance minister.

Jim Flaherty met with economists Friday and told them the government will take a “significant” hit from weaker economic growth prospects.

He says he intends to close tax loopholes and focus on controlling spending.

Some economists say the Harper government can still hit its target to balance the budget by 2015 — but only if the economy co-operates.
