The senior’s advocacy group CARP – a New Vision of Aging – is taking exception to a State Farm Insurance Poll that argues it’s time for a conversation with older Canadians about when to stop driving. A poll of 3,500 hundred respondents found that 94 percent think people should speak with senior family members about giving up their license if there are safety concerns but only 2 percent actually have that talk. CARP says singling out older drivers as a special problem is “ageist.” CARP VP Wanda Morris says there needs to be testing of all drivers and shouldn’t just focus on those over 65 years. She says that yes…growing older can impact certain driving skills, but says seniors can compensate by showing extra caution on the road. Statistics from Transport Canada show that once a driver reaches the age of 75, the rate of fatalities per distance traveled increases significantly.
