Ontario reported the lowest single-day increase in new COVID-19 cases in more than three weeks, and while Doug Ford says it’s a “positive trend” he can’t offer firm dates to lift restrictions. “Hopefully, it will be sooner than later but if we just do a knee jerk reaction, and say OK we’re opening up, that could backfire on us and then we go all the way back to the beginning and start over. Folks, please have patience, we’re getting there,” cautioned Ford.
Meantime, the province is expanding list of workers eligible for emergency child care to include parents who work in retirement homes, grocery stores and pharmacies.
The Premier is also defending the decision that no public sector workers have been laid off or given reduced pay. “We have 60,000 employees here and the government is still working, they’re working remotely, but everyone’s working,” said Ford. “It’s not like people have their feet up outside with a margarita in their hand,” add Ford.
The Premier also sent a strong message to residents of Quebec and Manitoba, where some COVID-19 restrictions are easing.”We don’t people right now coming across the border. I love Quebecers, I love people from Manitoba but stay at home and the same goes for the U-S as well, stay at home. It’s nothing personal but we can’t afford the spread of this virus here in Ontario,” said Ford.
