Russia wants a bigger claim to what lies on the Arctic Ocean floor.
That’s based on documents the country recently filed with the United Nations to expand its claim to the Arctic Ocean seabed and anything below it.
Arctic security and defence analyst Robert Huebert says Russia’s new submission gets as close to Canada’s exclusive economic zone as legally possible.
There’s a 200 nautical mile radius that belongs to Canada.
Russia’s submission also extends over those filed by Canada and Denmark, something Huebert says he hasn’t seen a country do before.
The U.N. still has to review the submission, but if approved, it would give Russia exclusive rights to potential resources in parts of the Arctic Ocean’s soil and subsoil.
Global Affairs Canada says Canada remains committed to fully exercising its sovereign rights in the Arctic and is studying Russia’s submission to prepare a response.
