AstraZeneca is no longer being recommended as first and now second dose.
Canada’s National Advisory Council on Immunization says new emerging evidence suggests mRNAs such as Pfizer or Moderna trigger better immune response, and the growing availability of vaccines makes the change possible.
Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Theresa Tam was asked about all those Zoomers and GenX’ers who already got two shots of AstraZeneca who now feel confused and angry that the rules are changing again.
“Those who received two doses of AstraZeneca, you’ve been provided with good protection against infection but more importantly, AstraZeneca provides good protection against severe illness and hospitalization and I’ll just point out that even with the Delta variant, two doses of AstraZeneca is important, it’s that second dose is important.”
NACI is also recommending that mRNA recipients receive a second shot of whatever product they received first unless the same product is not readily available as the both Pfizer and Moderna can be considered interchangeable
