There is new information on hospitalizations and emergency department visits for Canadian patients with COVID 19.
New data from the Canadian Institute for Health Information reveals that between January of 2020 and February of 2021, there were at least 36,320 hospital stays in Canada for patients (excluding Quebec) with a diagnoses of COVID-19.
Of these patients, nearly 1 in 5 (19%) died in hospital while more than half (54%) were discharged home.
More than one in five (22%) hospital stays included an intensive care unit admission.
Patients from the least-affluent neighbourhoods accounted for a higher proportion of in-hospital deaths (31.5%) compared with patients from the most-affluent neighbourhoods (11.4%).
The data also says the estimated total cost of COVID-19 hospital stays in Canada (excluding Quebec) is more than $821-million with an averaged estimated cost of nearly $23,000 for each hospital stay.
