Brampton’s mayor says he’s delighted and encouraged that Ontario is set to enter Step 3 of the Roadmap to Reopening on Friday.
But Patrick Brown warns there is no certainty we won’t enter another lockdown if the Delta variant takes hold and causes a surge in COVID cases this fall.
And that’s why both he and Peel Region Medical Officer of Health Dr. Lawrence Loh are appealing to COVID vaccine holdouts to get two shots of vaccine ASAP.
“And if you have never been vaccinated, if you get COVID-19, you don’t know how your immune system is going to react,” explained Dr. Loh on Wednesday, “It’s basically spinning the roulette wheel. So it could be a mild cold or you could end up in ICU with a tube down your throat. That will remain for anyone who is unvaccinated. Once your immune system is primed with the vaccine, so that it knows what this virus looks like then it’s no longer novel to you. And that’s the reason why we’re saying two doses of vaccine.”
Both Dr. Loh and Mayor Brown shared some good news Wednesday. There is just one person currently in a hospital ICU in Peel Region with COVID-19.
Across the province, 78 percent of eligible residents have received one dose of vaccine, 57 percent are fully vaccinated with two doses.
