It’s taken 145 years but Germany’s Bayreuth Festival has its first female conductor.
She’s 43-year old Oskana Lyniv, a native of Ukraine, who’ll conduct Richard Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman.
The Bayreuth Festival is one of the most venerable events in classical music. Wagner founded it to present his own operas and it’s been open most summers since 1876.
Lyniv makes her debut Sunday.
