President Joe Biden says the U-S is developing sharper rules to track, monitor and potentially shoot down unknown objects.
His comments come three weeks after a suspected Chinese spy balloon was shot down over South Carolina. Biden says he’s spoken with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and made the call to shoot down three other objects in consultation with Canadian officials.
“Our military and the Canadian military are synching the recovery of the debris so we can learn more about these three objects,” Biden told reporters.
U-S and Canadian recovery teams are battling difficult terrain and harsh conditions to retrieve debris from the objects downed off the coast of Alaska, in a remote stretch of Yukon and in Lake Huron.
Biden says intelligence officials have said they believe the objects are most likely harmless.
“The intelligence community’s current assessment is that these objects were most likely balloons tied to private companies, recreation or research institutions conducting weather or conducting other scientific research.”
