He established himself as a leading music video director in the 1980s and then found acclaim with his 2002 documentary about Motown session musicians.

Paul Justman’s documentary was called “Standing in the Shadows of Motown.” Upon its release, one critic wrote the doc is one of the few nonfiction films that will have you walking out humming the score.

The documentary was a celebration of the unheralded session musicians behind countless Motown hits in the 1960s.  It focused on a group known as “The Funk Brothers” who played on most of the hits but worked in obscurity.

Paul Justman’s death at his home in Los Angeles earlier in the year is just now being reported and confirmed by his brother.

Paul Justman was 74.
