In a mission seven years in the making, a spacecraft is set to deliver its rare cargo on Sunday and Canada is getting a piece of the interstellar payload.

Launched back in 2016, the NASA-led OSIRIS-REx mission collected pieces of the asteroid Bennu in 2020 before starting its journey back to Earth.

Canada contributed to the mission with an instrument that was used to scan the asteroid in selecting the ideal site from which to gather the sample.

OSIRIS-REx is Canada’s first mission to retrieve an asteroid sample.

However, Canada will have to wait a while before the United States delivers the rocks and dust, as the Canadian Space Agency needs to build a special facility south of Montreal in which to store the rare fragments of asteroid.

The sample is expected to land Sunday morning in the Utah desert .
