Dianne Feinstein, the oldest sitting U.S. Senator, has died at her Washington, D.C., home.
The Democrat of California broke gender barriers throughout her long career in local and national politics.
First elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1969, Feinstein became its first female president in 1978, the same year Mayor George Moscone was fatally shot alongside board supervisor Harvey Milk at City Hall by Dan White; a disgruntled former supervisor.
Following Moscone’s death, she became San Francisco’s first woman mayor.
In the Senate, she was one of the state’s first two female senators; the first woman to head the Senate intelligence committee and first female to serve as the Senate judiciary committee’s top Democrat.
President Joe Biden calls Feinstein ”a pioneering American,” a ”true trailblazer.”
