The Toronto Public Library Board will vote this evening whether to rename its Jane-Dundas location the Daniel G. Hill branch.
The late father of Grammy Award winning musician Dan and his celebrated author brother Lawrence, was a sociologist, historian, writer, activist and human rights defender.
In fact he was the first director of the Ontario Human Rights Commission, then commissioner.
Daniel G. Hill was also the recipient of the Order of Ontario and appointed an officer of the Order of Canada.
The vote caps an eight-year effort to name the branch after Hill.
The Ontario Black History Society and the Hill family requested in 2016 that a library branch be named in his honour.
That year the library board directed the city librarian to consider future naming opportunities.
If approved, signage at the branch will be updated sometime this fall with a commemorative plaque describing Hill’s achievements.
