Hurricane Beryl is roaring across the Caribbean Sea as a monstrous Category 5 storm on a path that would take it near Jamaica and the Cayman Islands.
At least four people have died after Beryl slammed ashore in the southeast Caribbean.
It is very rare to see a major hurricane in either June or even July.
But due to water temperatures 2 to 4 degrees above average and that pared with reducing wind shear are the two variables that make this season look like it could be big for hurricanes.
In fact, Beryl is the earliest Category 5 storm ever to form in the Atlantic, fueled by record warm waters.
Beryl is expected to start losing intensity Tuesday but still to be near major hurricane strength as it passes near Jamaica, the Cayman Islands and Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula.
