Toronto has a rat problem.
A sharp rise in the rodents is due to Toronto’s never-ending construction and two councillors want to fix the problem before it gets worse.
In a motion adopted this week, councillors Amber Morley and Alejandro Bravo asked city staff to report back on how to create strategies, likes ones in place in other cities, to manage the problem.
Councillor Bravo calls it a frightening situation that cuts across every income level.
She also told council in addition to non stop construction., there are other factors for the rise in rats including poor waste management and poor building maintenance that create breeding grounds.
Toronto currently doesn’t have a formal process to deal with rats. Councillors Morley and Bravo also want city staff to determine what responsibility construction companies have in reducing the problem.
