It’s taken 50-years for a Black, Mississippi-born musician, who died half a century ago, to finally be recognized for helping invent rock ‘n’ roll.
“That’s All Right.” the first single ever released by Elvis Presley was written by Arthur “Big Boy” Crudup in 1946 and became the first single Presley ever released.
It’s estimated Crudup should have earned $2 million in today’s currency in writing royalties but lived out his later years leading a crew picking vegetables in Virginia because his manager held the rights to his songs.
Today, the state of Virginia is installing a highway marker honouring Crudup and there is a push to see him installed in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
