The big tropical storm is taking aim at the U-S Gulf Coast, with New Orleans a potential target just one day shy of the seventh anniversary of hurricane Katrina.

Louisiana and Mississippi have declared emergencies ahead of the storm.

Oil rigs have been evacuated in the Gulf of Mexico, pushing the price of crude up above $97 US a barrel.

Meanwhile, Haitians are digging themselves out of the mud after the passage of Isaac.

Eight people died in the storm.

Neighbouring Dominican Republic reported two dead and officials say the devastation turned out to be less than feared.
