An 83-year-old woman in a nursing home in North York is the first Toronto resident with a confirmed case of the influenza-a virus.
Associate Medical Officer of Health Dr. Anita Dubey says it means flu season is upon us.
Toronto Public Health is recommending people in high risk categories be vaccinated. They include those over 65, and people in nursing or chronic care homes. Public Health is also advising parents of children up to five years old that they could develop severe complications from the flu and should be vaccinated.
The city will begin offering free flu shots at clinics next week. And, for the first time, about 100 pharmacists across the city have been licensed to provide the shots.
