Canada’s Prime Minister says the G8 leaders are unlikely to reach a concensus on the escalating violence in Syria.

Stephen Harper says he doesn’t think there’s much hope of getting Russia to drop its long-standing support of the Assad regime. He calls it “the G-7 plus one” on the issue of the long-standing and bitter civil war.

Russia has disputed U-S claims that forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar Assad have used chemical warfare against the rebels. Russian President Vladimir Putin also condemns the US decision to arm some of the Syrian rebels.

Harper says Canada will not join its allies in providing arms.
