Toronto is now under an Extreme Heat Alert, as declared by Dr. David McKeown, Toronto’s Medical Officer of Health.  Seven cooling centres are being opened for those who don’t have access to air conditioning, and seven city pools will stay open late into the evening.

The Extreme Heat Alert has been announced at the start of what could be the first heat wave of the summer.  A heat wave is described as three days in a row when the temperature reaches at least 32 celcius.  Today’s high is expected to reach 32, same for tomorrow and Thursday.  Yesterday, was close,  at 31.2 degrees celcius.

It will be a little cooler by the lake, but Environment Canada’s Trudy McCormack says if you’re looking for relief, an air conditioned environment is the best way to cool down.  She also advises you drink a lot of water, and avoid exercising outside.

During an Extreme Heat Alert, we are also encouraged to check in on elderly neighbours and family members to make sure they don’t get overheated.
