A critic, who championed avant-garde artists and famously declared that the history of art was over, has died.
Arthur Danto, 89, died of heart failure.
He coined the term ”artworld” in a 1964 essay, defining it as the cultural and historical context in which a work of art is created.
Twenty years later, he published his most famous essay, “The End of Art”.
In it, Danto recounts a visit to Andy Warhol’s exhibition of Brillo boxes at the Stable Gallery in 1964 and argues that the show marked the end of art history.
