One of Europe’s most famed piano makers is shutting down.
The Pleyel was a favoured instrument by Chopin, Debussy, and Liszt.
The company was founded in 1807 by Ignaz Pleyel, who was a composer and student of Joseph Haydn. But it has been struggling to compete with cheaper instruments made in Asia.
It has recently concentrated on luxury and custom pianos in a bid to stay afloat. They came with a steep price-tag: between 55-and-270 thousand dollars.
Pleyel has manufactured nearly a quarter of a million pianos over two centuries. The French government says it is an important brand, and it will try to find a way to keep Pleyel in business
