An exciting breakthrough in the fight against cancer.
And some have been bold enough to call it – a cure.
It’s an experimental treatment known as immuno-oncology – or I.O. – which harnesses the body’s natural defences, to battle tumours.
I.O. cuts through the deception tactics tumours use to “hide” from the body’s immune system by disguising themselves – as perfectly normal cells.
Several drug makers have unveiled early data showing dramatic improvements when I.O. was used in combination with other drugs.
Other approaches are being explored too.
Novartis is developing a treatment which involves extracting blood from a patient and re-programming killer cells – to make them even more powerful.
