It’s a new idea that could significantly improve the lives of those who have early stages of dementia.
Researchers at the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute’s iDAPT facility are proposing a graduated licensing system for older drivers, similar to what’s used for beginners.
Director Geoff Fernie says it would allow more seniors to stay on the road longer and more safely.
He says there are a lot of people driving with dementia, some of whom shouldn’t be, but then there are a lot not driving with dementia, who could be.
He suggests a customized license where people would be limited to driving in certain conditions, in daylight and on certain streets.
According to a Canadian study, there are expected to be nearly 100-thousand drivers with dementia in Ontario by 2028 – more than double the current number.
