Six daycare centres among other services will be closed in Durham Region this morning, as 16-hundred inside workers prepare to go on strike at 6:00 this morning.  Representatives of CUPE local 1764 have been negotiating a new collective agreement on their behalf with Durham Region but talks have broken down.  The employees provide services in child care, income support, court services, public health inspections, traffic operations, and paramedical services.  Paramedics must stay on the job under the Ambulance Act.  One of the key sticking points is increases in benefits.

Parents who’s children go to the following daycares will have to make other childcare arrangements:

Pickering Child Care Centre, Ajax Child Care Centre, Whitby Child Care Centre, Gibb Street Child Care Centre, Lakewoods Child Care Centre and the Edna Thomson Child Care Centre.
