An education watchdog group says Ontario is risking its future by not having more music teachers in schools.
The annual report from People for Education says only 43% of elementary schools had teachers dedicated to a music curriculum last year. That’s the lowest in Canada, and down from 49% in 2012.
Executive director Annie Kidder says music helps kids think creatively, a skill that could one day help them in the job market. She says corporate executives are telling them the ability to create is a key component of being an entrepreneur.
Kidder says she hopes Kathleen Wynne’s new government doesn’t slash education funding as it seeks to balance the books. She calls the spending an investment that “pays off tenfold later.”
Last week we told you about a report that urged schools not to cut music in favour of core math and reading skills after finding a link between music instruction and academic achievement.
