Wow! 116 birthday candles!
U.S. researchers have confirmed that a south Arkansas woman is the oldest living American – and second-oldest person in the world.
Newly analyzed census records confirm that Gertrude Weaver is celebrating her 116th birthday today.
Researchers say the 1900 Census listed Weaver as 2 years old – putting her birthday in 1898 but no birth record exists for her, so Weaver celebrates her birthday each year on the 4th of July.
The Gerontology Research Group consults for the Guinness Book of World Records.
Robert Young, Guinness’ Senior Consultant for Gerontology, says Weaver is indeed the second-oldest confirmed person in the world, behind 116-year-old Misao Okawa of Japan.
She was born March 5th,1898 – and says the key to a long life is eating sushi – and getting at least eight hours of sleep a night.
She told reporters: “Eat and sleep and you will live a long time. You have to learn to relax.”
