The Senate is referring the expense files of nine senators to the Mounties – in the midst of the shock waves generated by an explosive forensic audit – flagging close to $977,000 in questionable spending.

In total , auditor general Michael Ferguson’s report identifies $976,627 in questionable spending – among 30 current and retired senators.

And of those, the Senate will be recommending that the RCMP conduct a criminal review on the spending of nine senators : two of them still sitting in the upper chamber – and the other seven retired.

Just five senators account for about $546,000 of the spending that Ferguson identifies in the audit –  delivered to the Senate yesterday – and to be released publicly next week.

The audit reportedly cost nearly $21 million to conduct.

It reviewed more than 80,000 transactions worth about $180 million.
