Three months after being found guilty of trying to leave Canada to join the Islamic State group, a 29-year-old Quebec man’s been sentenced to nine years in prison.

Ismael Habib’s the first adult to be tried on charges of attempting to leave the country to participate in terrorist activity – a section of the Anti-terorrism Act made law by the Harper government in 2013.

He was facing up to 10 years.

The Crown had wanted nine-years, arguing it was justified by the fact Habib buys into the ideology of ISIS and shows no remorse.

His lawyer, who proposed a sentence of six-years, six months, claimed there’s no proof his client bought into it completely or that he’s a danger to the public.

During the trial, it was revealed that unbeknownst to Habib, he had told an undercover Mountie posing as a crime boss selling fake passports, that it was his ”duty” to fight alongside ISIS in Syria.

However, Habib told the court he desperately wanted to go overseas to rejoin his wife and children, who’d been living abroad and thought he was merely telling the officer what he wanted to hear.

The judge rejected that argument, saying Habib had a history of deception.
