The Canadian Senate is gaining its first Indigenous member from Ontario.
She is Metis lawyer and scholar Yvonne Boyer – who has complained of “racist assumptions” in Canada’s health system.
Boyer will fill one of a dozen vacancies in the Senate.
She co-authored a report about sterilization of seven Indigenous women in Saskatchewan – noting, that as recently as 2015 – women have been coerced into being sterilized.
