There’s new evidence that the new coronavirus is less deadly than SARS.
While the number of cases of this new virus is more than the infections China had with SARS, the death toll is lower.
China had just over 5300 cases of SARS in the 2002-2003 outbreak, while 348 people died of SARS in China.
Severe acute respiratory syndrome killed nearly 800 people worldwide including 44 in Canada.
Currently there are some 6000 cases of the novel coronavirus in China with 132 deaths.
Here in Canada, there is a presumptive case in Ottawa, a presumptive case in British Columbia and two confirmed cases in Toronto.
Public health experts continue to say the risk of contracting this new illness in Canada is very low.
