New research related to COVID-19 suggests antibodies the immune system makes to fight the new coronavirus do not necessarily generate lifetime immunity.
Doctor Otto Yang and his team of scientists at the University of California measured antibodies in 30 patients diagnosed with COVID-19 and four others presumed to have had the virus – all with mild symptoms and an average age of 43.
The researchers found the antibodies had a half life of 73 days, which means half of them would be gone after that much time.
The scientists says the results call for caution regarding antibody-based “immunity passports”, herd immunity and perhaps vaccine durability.
