This spring marks several milestones in Billy Joel’s life. His first hit – and signature song – ‘Piano Man’ was released 50 years ago; he recently celebrated his 100th concert in New York’s Madison Square Garden, and released his first new and original pop record in 3 decades. Oh – he’s also turning 75 next week.
So I take great pleasure in presenting ten of ‘Billy’s Best’ – from his first to his latest release, his chart-topping trio of hits, and two live performances in duets with two music legends, even greater than him !! I don’t think he’d mind me saying that.
I’ll also salute the late Toronto-born singer-songwriter R. Dean Taylor on what would’ve been his 85th birthday. Taylor’s first local hits in the early 60s, gave little indication of his later success as a Motown songwriter, and his emergence as Motown’s first white solo artist to land a major North American hit.
Plus: our first-hour feature: ‘The Sunday Sock Hop’ – with five songs of Mexico (fittingly) celebrating ‘Cinco de Mayo’, plus some doo wop, and a rockabilly classic in the ‘Gene’s Jukebox’ spotlight. That’s all on this Sunday’s (May 5th) edition of ‘Vintage Favourites’ from 2:00 to 4:30.
