Sirens blared in Israel early this morning to mark Holocaust Remembrance Day.
Most shops were closed and most stood in silence to honour the 6 million Jewish people killed in the Holocaust.
In Toronto, members of the Jewish community gathered for the annual commemoration to honour the victims of the Holocaust and honour the survivors. Dara Solomon with Toronto’s Holocaust Museum says this year event holds greater significance given the rise of anti semitism around the world.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau visited the Holocaust Museum on Sunday.
How has October 7th awakened the trauma for Holocaust survivors like Andy Reti who tells Zoomer Radio News what survivors who witnessed the atrocities are going through.
“They’re all scared, some of them have recurring nightmares, things that took years to eliminate from their system, is rearing its ugly head again.”
Holocaust Remembrance Day, also called Yom HaShoah, began at sundown Sunday and ends Monday night.
The event, now in its 36th year, is the first since the October 7th attacks in Isreal.
